details of last week
Aug. 24th, 2008 10:34 pmfri. night stopped working around 6, went out to dinner w Rook and Moomin at Buck's. we ran into Liz D. from I speak of dreams and I showed her the old geocache that me and Minnie did 5 years ago. still going strong and people signing the log book every few days! Rook lucked out and had the best food ever, jerk chicken w fried bananas and pineapple and black beans. omg. i am a sucker for platanos and black beans. so creamylicious! Moomin climbed the wooden fish and looked at the mostly dried up creek... i sat there on the curb gazing around... he will remember me as the boring mom who does not go down the exciting woodland path... OR i will get better and maybe he will get to remember me more active
in the morning i loafed a bit, worked a bit, messed around w Moomin's computer setting him up to do comic strips on it & print them out. rook and i cleaned up the whole area and made it nice in preparation for school (starts in sept, next week)
note to self remember to buy him a new lunchbox
Watched 3 stooges which moomin liked but which sent him kind of into a frenzy of worry or anticipation -
then The Train which was a fanfuckingtastic movie - I loved it so much - Explosions - arty nazis - surly american who is so not french - train wrecks with real trains! fake air raid that took 50 people 6 weeks to wire up and then they detonated and filmed it all in under 1 minutes. OMG the explosions! aesthetics & fascism! people joining the resistance spontaneously not really knowing what the hell was on the train or why and being killed for it! it totally not being about paintings anyway but more like class struggle!
Nazi art lover: "they belong to me... they'll always belong to me OR MEN LIKE ME. "
Fake french guy: *surly look*
Nazi art dude: *sneer*
Fake French guy: *MACHINE GUN BULLETS TO THE CHEST*
I was heartened that the hotel concierge was not among the corpses because there was a cheap moment available for the director to have Lebiche (does that mean cockroach as it might in some regions in spanish?) gaze at her broken body which would have just pissed me off. She was not in the pile of bodies. I can't see them having a happy ending either.
It was even better than Wages of Fear!!!
hung out doing... uhhh what? going through zines... stuff... housework... dicking around. It was good not to have a giant goal. I was procrastinating doing book call for submissions.
Rook took Moomin up for a sleepover & I went to SF. Wrote. Messed with zine stuff. then off to riot grrl thingie. Awesome!!!!! so good! I liked being called the Lenin of the Riot Grrl movement. that goes down smooth. tattoo it on my ass, someone?
Morning, writing and messing about, reading Godfather of the Kremlin. Moomin dropped off - demanded playground - we did that - he met some kids - i laid in sun - with computer and without - we made plans to go to sears to buy a mattress which i think is an entirely exotic american cultural activity. sears roebuck catalogue, baby! americana! obtained mattress. Moomin played on every kind of exercise machine and requested a trampoline for our yard. looked with moomin into hot topic AND spencers (how? both in same mall quadrant? miracle! where Moomin knows not to be giggling at things that are not for kids just stick to the superhero or punk stuff and avert your eyes from ties that say fuck all over them. moomin was dazzled by Hot Topic. I felt a smug feeling as if my cultural heritage were heritaging all over my child. Yes dear. You absolutely MAY wear that leather bracelnt with the little star shaped studs on it that give you STAR POWERS and PUNK ROCK POWER that shoots out of your wrists.
ice cream - we enjoyed the fruits of the mall - shared a table in food court with a guy and his kid. "que quieres mi amor. quieres ice cream?" affectionate low key spanglish. we escaped without buying anything other than the star shaped bracelet and an on-sale mattress to be delivered!
drove back thru 3rd street hunters point an awesome neighborhood, looking good, i will go explore at some point. restaurants!
on the way back to RWC Moomin and I talked about sF vs. fantasy, what character he would bring to Wiscon (the sea serpent he made up that is from the Dragons scientist movie from when they evolved into sea serpents after the comet or asteroid hit the earth) (He is unsure of the gender of the sea serpent, and thought about this.) Or, Kel or Daine. (I promised to read Wild Magic with him this week.)
We discussed Mistakes. He cannot stand it when the people in books make mistakes and he has to think it all out the right way but it is very hard to make there be a story all the way thorugh without the mistakes. he wonders why that is? Why is it hard to tell the story when you could just have Bilbo and the dwarves not go off the path! But then, how to get them to the dragon? Can it happen even if they don't make mistakes?
I say some mistakes, are mistakes or bad, but they do not turn out 100% bad. they lead you to an adventure. or the thing that's bad teaches you something that you use later to beat a similar situation that now you know about. Or you're late to classs, and have to stay after school, but when you do, you end up meeting your new best friend. He challenged me to find a good consequence for getting a soccer ball kicked into your stomach so that you cried. "Which I think happened once, kind of, to me, I think it was in school, or sort of school." (I think sort of school meant, Phys Ed.) "Well 30 years from now you have a child and they come home crying to you because they were kicked in the stomach with a soccer ball and it hurts and you say to them oh I know just how you feel, because that happened to me." "Not very likely, and takes too long, first you have to grow up, then, get married, ew, and have a kid, ew, ew, and then it has to grow up enough to go to school and coincidentally get kicked in the stomach with a soccer ball in exactly the same way you did! How likely is that!" "Ahahaaah! True! But you would understand their suffering in other ways, because of your earlier suffering!" "Oh, I guess that's true. It's just a long time away." "Yeah and rather than learn empathy it would be nice if NO ONE HAD TO SUFFER ANYTHING AT ALL EVER." "I'll say!"
We talked about the wild magic book. he said A. would like it! He told me a long story about how school talks about learning words from context, and it has a fancy name, but he thought, that's just what he already does and didn't know you had to learn it.
Oh and according to Moomin, Fantasy has magic in it. Science fiction has things happen because of regular science. So, in the Magic Tree house books they go back in time, but it's through MAGIC. But in the Time Machine the guy invents a machine that goes back in time, but with science, and that makes it science fiction. "It has to be really hard science that no one knows or has invented yet."
worked on thinking about wiscon book. writing back and forth w people. Tagging panel reports & stuff. Thinking!!
wrote up riot grrl reading a bit, not quite posted... made flickr group for riot grrl photos... noted wikipedia page blows - okay on bands, nothing on the actual organizations and zines. must compile lists. problem of anti hierarchical organization cannot make "best of" lists 8-) I can and will. Or just a huge list of everything I can think of.

Date: 2008-08-25 05:33 pm (UTC)He did come to all my sports games and cheered for everyone on the team. He and I learned to program BASIC together. He shared all his cryptography and prison-escape books. I crawled through the attic laying speakerwire, and he taught me how to hook it all up.
I never really think about the things he couldn't or didn't do. That was just dad - not much for rock scrambling, great with a terrain map.
I suspect Moomin will feel the same way about you -- you don't seem unusual to him, you're just mom, and you do what moms do.
