I liked the novelette when it came out. It was a simple story, with no wasted words. It had a clear but morally ambiguous and disturbing message. The novel was the same story over again, padded with filler and crap. I was stunned to find that Ender was somehow predestined, rather than simply selected and used as in the novelette. The characters were unbelievable and the family politics was distasteful. It was like Card got hooked on pushing the reader's emotional buttons, and decided that if one emotional punch was good, flailing away with dozens would be even better. What an awful mess.
