She employed that differently than any other fantasy writer had ever done. Fantasy attempting "American" fantasy tend to tip to Appalachia and so on. She did something else.

I feel that LB got a lot for her Knife series from the Shipper books, particularly that vague sense of environmental post-apocalypse continental U.S. landscape and geography.
