damned-colonial had a great idea the other day!

FanTechCamp, the Fannish Technology BarCamp.

A BarCamp (aka unconference) is a sort of unscheduled, freeform convention where people can run sessions on any subject they think is interesting. People say the best part of a con is the hallway conversations, right? Well, this is a con that's *all* hallway conversation! You come up with something you'd like to talk about, mark it on an impromptu schedule on the wall, and grab a space. Every time I've been to a BarCamp I've met amazing people, learnt interesting stuff, and had great conversations. Plus, they're relatively low cost and easy to organise.

Some potential topics we came up with include:

* wikis (wikipedia, wikia, fanlore, etc)
* journalling services (dreamwidth, livejournal)
* OTW's Archive Of Our Own and other fanfic archiving tools
* tools for writers (Scrivener, etc)
* fan vidding - HOWTOs, tools, techniques
* fan art - photoshop, etc.
* fanfic ebooks, podfic, etc
* tools for organising fannish events
* understanding copyright, creative commons, etc

So far it looks as if this will be in San Francisco the weekend of October 10th-11th (one week after [info - livejournal.com] bascon. My work can probably provide the space if we have up to ~100 people attending; I need to work up a budget and stuff and get approval from $bigboss, but it should be OK.

Anyway, if you're interested, and ESPECIALLY if you're interested in helping plan/organise/volunteer, put your name on the wiki or just comment here.

Count me in as definitely interested...

Oooh! I'm interested in hearing more about this. I'm thinking about doing some podcasting the future, so this sounds like it would be great!

If I am still unemployed at that point, I could probably provide some vidding how-tos -- though it'd be Mac-only.

Hee! Don't worry, I didn't think you wanted me to stay broke just for you. (:

I am definitely better suited to sharing than leading, when it comes to this kind of thing. It sounds like a great event! Hope I can be a part of it.

P.S. Sorry I haven't followed up on the wiki yet, but my RSIs have been acting up and I need to be AFK for a while.
